AMERICAN CULTURE
American culture is very diverse. Most people live where everyone is the same ethnicity or practice the same religion. Here in America we have a variety of religions such as Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism. You name it, we have it. Another thing we have that differently is the type of music we listen to. Some styles people might listen to are rap, country, rock ‘n’ roll, religious and alternative. Americans are also defined by the movies we watch, books we read, TV we watch, games we play and our manners. To me, Americans are normal, but I wonder what other countries think.
MY CULTURE
I define my culture as Polish-American and Roman Catholic. My mom is 100% Polish and so are her brothers. Like them, I was raised into a Roman Catholic family. Two of the main holidays I celebrate as a Christian are Christmas and Easter. Every year on Christmas Eve we go to mass to honor Jesus. After my family and I go to my grandmas and we share the Optlak. The Optlak is a blessed wafer symbolizing strong family ties. To join in this celebration, you simply have to break a larger wafer into smaller pieces and share the wafer with your loved ones. When you go up to them you wish them a Merry Christmas and give them a kiss or a hug. Another way to define my culture is by art. We have Polish pottery all around my house. My favorite is a plate we have above our fire place. It has pretty designs in white and blue colors. My family and I watch my cousin, Lydia, participate in Polish dance. One time she got to dance with her class before a Tiger’s game! I celebrate Christmas but others in America also celebrate Ramadan, Hanukkah, and many other holidays. Even though our cultures seem different they have one main thing in common, we all believe in strong family values.
